The Hong Kong prize is the second most prestigious international award after the Nobel Prize. It is given to scientists who demonstrate exceptional contributions in the scientific field. The winner is presented with an engraved gold medal and a cash prize of HK$25,000.
The award is organised by the Hong Kong University Alliance of Technology and Innovation and supported by the Hong Kong Science Museum. The prize was established in 2022 to promote scientific research and technology transfer in the Greater Bay Area, including Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. The Hong Kong prize is awarded to scientific researchers in the fields of astrophysics, life sciences and physical science, as well as mathematics and computer science.
In the past, the prize money has varied widely, from HK$750,000 for a fourth-place finish to HK$3 million for a first place win. Athletes who secure top-three finishes in individual events at the Olympics receive double that amount.
As of now, there are no plans to change the prize money for the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo. However, some sports associations have offered athletes additional incentives to improve their performance. Athletes who finish in the top eight in a team event will receive a bonus of up to HK$6 million, while a gold medal win will garner a minimum reward of HK$12 million.
